Widespread dismay over Council's proposal to dispose of historic Guildford House Gallery

There has been wide spread dismay amongst residents as news of the proposed disposal of Guildford House has spread. Liberal Democrat town centre councillors have been contacted by a number of residents and amenity groups to ask what can be done to stop this ill thought through scheme.

In an effort to save money, the Conservative Executive at Guildford Borough Council is being asked to approve the move of the Tourist Information Centre from its present site in Tunsgate to 170 High Street, the rear part of which will be made into an art gallery. The Borough's art collection can then be moved out of Guildford House, along with the shop, the coffee shop will close and Guildford House can be sold or let to private buyers.

Guildford House is a grade I listed building which was restored by the Borough at great cost, and which is one of the jewels of the High Street. Councillor Sarah Di Caprio has said "I cannot understand the logic of disposing of this building that attracts so many visitors.

With its' ability to hold National Touring exhibitions, the building has brought many and varied exhibitions to our High Street. It is loved and visited by many residents as well as visiting tourists."

Councillor Caroline Reeves said "There are a number of options which could save money, but none of them should include disposal of Guildford House. Although various groups have been contacted to discuss the proposal, it would seem that none of their ideas have been included in the new plan. There is an abundance of knowledge and enthusiasm in our resident groups and societies which could be used to create a whole new life for Guildford House, but there doesn't appear to be the will to involve residents. I cannot believe that we are being asked to allow Guildford House to become another retail outlet when we have such a charismatic building just waiting to be brought to life."

The Executive will be voting on the proposal at their meeting this Thursday 25th, 7.00pm at Millmead.
